Selena Gomez Sees 'How Big Disney Can Make People'!

Selena Gomez

"While her friend Demi Lovato dreams of one day becoming a heavy-metal songstress, and the Jonas Brothers are hard at work breaking out of their teen mold, Selena Gomez has taken up a more traditional Disney pursuit: playing a modern-day Cinderella. The actress stars as aspiring dancer Mary in "Another Cinderella Story," set to hit your local video store on September 16.

"She's a little different [from the original Cinderella] by the fact that she's a dancer," Gomez told MTV News. "I think that brings a whole new element to the movie. She's an aspiring dancer, and she wants to go after her dreams. She sings as well. It's her achieving her dreams in a different way."

In the movie, Mary dances with pop star J.P. (Drew Seeley) at her school dance. Since he doesn't know who she is, he decides to hold a competition for his new music video to find her again. (In real life, the video for the movie's track "Tell Me Something I Don't Know," featuring Gomez playing a maid, aired on "TRL" last week.)

Although Gomez can sing and dance in real life, there were still numbers that she found difficult to master for the movie. "My favorite musical number has to be the tango piece," the 16-year-old said. "It's when the two characters meet and fall in love. It's one of the hardest dances I've learned, but the most beautiful."

With a new movie out, her hit series "The Wizards of Waverly Place" entering its second season and an album in the works, Selena is looking like a key player in Disney's pop-culture takeover.

"It's crazy to see how big Disney can make people, and it's wonderful," Gomez said. "I feel blessed to be a part of the company, and they take care of their kids. I just think it has a good strong foundation to lean on."

Gomez is rumored to be dating Nick Jonas, so of course we had to get her take on the big Russell Brand VMA flap over the teens' purity rings. She kept things PC, though, and agreed with Nick's earlier comment that "it's cool to see that he recognizes we are gentlemen."

"I love the answer of [them being gentlemen]," she said, "because it's true."

Thanks MTV!
